Dr. Caroline Bergner
Dr. Caroline Bergner (MD) is an adult neurologist and researcher specializing in leukodystrophies of adulthood. She completed her medical studies at the University of Tübingen before pursuing her residency in Neurology at the University Medicine of Göttingen. Her postdoctoral research further broadened her expertise, as she worked in the lab of Prof. Mikael Simons at the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine, studying oligodendrocyte and microglia cell biology in the context of multiple sclerosis and in the lab of Prof. Christine Stadelmann at the Institute of Neuropathology, focusing on the histopathology and cellular pathomechanisms of hereditary leukodystrophies.
Since 2021, Dr. Bergner has led the Leukodystrophy Lab at the Clinic of Neurology in Leipzig, where her research investigates transplantable leukodystrophies, with a particular emphasis on microglial damage and its implications for disease progression and therapeutic strategies. Her work also includes a special focus on studying the specific adulthood phenotypes of hereditary leukodystrophies. In 2023, Dr. Bergner became the head of the Adulthood Leukodystrophy Outpatient Clinic at Leipzig University Hospital, where she continues to advance both clinical care and research in this specialized area.
